Sales Tax Calculator by State

Choose a state, add the transaction lines, and enter a local rate when one applies. The calculator loads the confirmed state base rate, shows every part of the math, and can add tax or back tax out of an included total.

Calculate sales tax

The state rate comes from the versioned data file. Enter a local rate only when it applies to the transaction location.

What the calculator includes

The data file carries one record for every state, including the statewide rate, local rate behavior, official department link, review date, and a clear note when a nexus threshold was not confirmed. The local rate stays manual because accurate rooftop rates need a maintained address level data source.

How to use the result

Keep the sale amount, location, product or service, exemption record when applicable, rate source, and calculation with the transaction. A rate alone does not decide whether the sale is taxable or which jurisdiction receives the tax.

Why reverse mode helps

When a receipt or price already includes tax, reverse mode divides the included total by one plus the combined rate. The difference between the included total and the backed out amount is the estimated tax.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator look up a ZIP code rate?

No. The state base rate is confirmed from an official source, while the local rate is entered manually. A future address level lookup would need a maintained rate service.

Which states have no statewide sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide general sales tax. Alaska and Montana can still have local sales taxes in some places.

Does a sales threshold mean every sale is taxable?

No. Nexus, product taxability, sourcing, exemptions, and marketplace rules are separate questions. Check the linked state guidance for the transaction.
